On the 29th-30th June PYA members went on a residential with LYC members to Village Lodge in Bettws. As we are both working on reducing single use plastics in our towns, we thought it would be great to get together to learn a bit more about how we recycle plastics.
We did a lot of research into the financial and environmental benefits of recycling plastics as well as looking at what kinds of plastics are actually recyclable. We also looked at how we can turn non-recyclable plastics into something else so it doesn’t go to landfill. A tutor from Green City Events came to show us how to turn used tetra pack milk cartons into hanging plant pots. We also learned how to make seed bombs so that we can try and improve our green areas!
We talked about how much plastic ends up in the ocean too. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic in the ocean that sea life. As we live by the sea this was a difficult fact to accept. We got to take part in a surfing lesson at Rest Bay in Porthcawl. This highlighted that we need to look after our seas and ocean’s before it’s too late!
We had a great time on the residential and the surfing was so much fun! It was great to get together with LYC to talk about the work that we have each done for our own towns and share some ideas of how we can continue our hard work to make our town single use plastic free!
