PYA members attended 4 monthly meetings, 3 task group meeting and 4 Town Council meetings in the Spring term. Across this time, they have also attended events, and recruitment drives and have made progress on their next campaign topic. Within their meetings, members also put together a new survey to find out what issues local young people are facing so they can decide what they would like to focus on in their next campaign – the survey received 246 responses before it closed!

Penarth Guides
On the 23rd of January, members of PYA delivered a workshop to the Penarth Guides that got the young people talking about issues they and their peers face in their communities and taught them some skills to create their own campaign for a badge they can complete with the Guides. This workshop also gave members some insight into what other young people have issues with and what could be their next campaign topic.

Litter Campaign
Members of PYA spent some time distributing an infographic they had created from their survey results to different businesses and organisations. They felt that having a reminder of how people view litter in Penarth would encourage others to take more care with their rubbish. Members also organised a litter pick in the half-term – they started at Belle Vue Park, made their way down to the pier and then back through Alexandra Gardens. They collected just under 10 bags of rubbish and were supported by the Town Mayor and Elin from Keep Wales Tidy.

Members also attended a litter pick with the Creative Communities team from the Vale of Glamorgan Council around St. Paul’s Avenue and the adjoining alleyway.

Leisure Centre Take-Over
PYA Members attended the Leisure Centre Take-Over in March to promote the group and to ask young people to complete their survey – they also took part in some of the sports available!

Training
Penarth Youth Action members attended training for Youth Action Groups where they learnt about the National Participation Standards, the role of Youth Action Groups, the responsibilities of a Town Council versus the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and much more!

Some of our members have said that PYA is a chance to “change Penarth for the better and for all” and “an incredible experience that is unforgettable.”

We are always looking for new members, so if you are aged 11-18, live in Penarth and are passionate about change for young people and your community, then please get in touch!
