On the 3rd March PYA and LYC members visited Cowbridge Recycling Centre as a part of our joint project and Plastic Recycling Accreditation workbook. We got to learn about what happens to our recycling when we put it out for collection.

In the Rural Vale as far as Rhoose, the new recycling rules have been brought in already. This means people living in those areas are already separating their plastic, metal, cardboard and glass recycling. This will eventually happen in all parts of Vale throughout 2020. We learned that this new system makes it easier for workers to separate the waste and helps prevent contamination.

We were shown how all the different machinery works to separate and bale the waste. This helps to make it easier to transport. The different materials are sent to different places in the UK to be recycled and turned into new materials. For example, the food waste is used to turn into energy and fertilizer for farmers. A bigger recycling centre is being built in Barry to be able to hold all of the recyclable waste from the whole Vale.

It was great to learn about how much of our waste is now being recycled instead of ending up in landfill.
