Winning Poem Text – Alphonsa, St. Josephs

I know you love Christmas time,
But have you thought about this little rhyme?

Christmas is about giving and sharing,
Being grateful, and being caring.

You have meals together, lights together,
Gifts together, Good times together.

But have you thought about those,
Who don’t have gifts, who don’t have clothes.

Have a think or maybe try,
Give a dress or a new bowtie

Maybe think or try to do
The things I have just told you.

Highly Commended Poem – Evie, Cogan Primary School

Christmas is a magical holiday that we celebrate
Here in our houses that we decorate
Ribbons on the gifts we place underneath the tree
In time to give on Christmas day to all our family
Seeing peoples faces full of joyful smiles
Truly makes me feel warm inside
Many people aren’t so lucky so we must bare this in mind
And realise there’s more to Christmas than gifts
So please remember to be kind.

Highly Commended Poem – Winston, Ysgol Pen-Y-Garth

What is this thing with lights so bright,
Dinner, gifts, and a tree at night?
I wag and I wonder, could I give too?
But I’ve no shiny, no sparkly, nothing new.

Then I remember, in the cold, in the frost,
I dig and I dig, for the treasure I lost.
It’s soggy, it’s stinky, it’s torn at the seams,
But it’s mine, and it carries my puppy-heart dreams.

The stink fills the air – oh it’s awful I know!
With my treasure in tow, no need for a bow
I drop it at his feet with a slobbery plop,
My gift to him, my tail won’t stop.

The boy softly smiles; in his eyes, it seems.
I am the heart of his Christmas dreams.
Because giving’s not fancy or toys that are new –
It’s sharing the best part of me with you.
