Penath Town Mayor, Cllr Laura Rochefort was out and about this weekend celebrating the Queens Platinum Jubilee.

The Town Mayor kick started the long weekend of festivities by officially lighting the town beacon at Penarth Cliff tops. The beacon lighting and fireworks display was attended by over 2000 people. In her speech she said:

Queen-Elizabeth II is a much loved and respected figure across the globe. Since her coronation on the 2nd of June 1953 she has carried out more than 21,000 engagements, travelled more widely than any other monarch and been served by 14 Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom.

Known for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service, she has been an important figurehead for the UK and the Commonwealth during times of great social change. The lighting of beacons now symbolises unity across towns, borders, countries and continents at times of celebration and remembrance. Tonight, Penarth joins more than 2000 beacons across the UK and the commonwealth marking the occasion.”

Cllr Rochefort also celebrated at the Clive Arms garden party which, in addition to celebrating the jubilee, helped to raise money for Ty Hafan’s therapeutic Gardens.
Tŷ Hafan is one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities and offers care to children and support for their families, throughout Wales. Their Gardening projects and green spaces have offered a great space for children and parents to relax and be in nature.

Cllr Rochefort said:

Its wonderful that these celebrations can be used as a way to bring our community closer together and help those in need. I would like to say a special thank you to the Vale of Glamorgan Brass band, all the team at the Clive Arms, to Penarth Youth action for their support, and to The National Lottery players who helped to make celebrations across Penarth possible.”
