🌺 80th Anniversary of V-J Day – 15 August 2025
Penarth Town Council joins the nation today in marking the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) – the day in 1945 when the Second World War came to an end in the Pacific.
On 15 August 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, bringing to a close a conflict that had spanned six long years and touched every community in the UK, including here in Penarth. For many, particularly those who served in the Far East, this moment marked the long-awaited return to peace after years of hardship and loss.
As a community, we remember and honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those from Penarth and beyond who served, and of the countless civilians whose lives were forever changed. Their legacy is not only the peace we have enjoyed for eight decades, but also a powerful reminder of the cost of securing it.
Together, as a town, let us ensure that the stories, service, and sacrifices of that generation are never forgotten.
