Knowing that the real answers lie not in what people say\, but in the silence that they keep . . .\n\nAnn Cleeves is the author of 40 critically acclaimed novels\, and in 2017 was awarded the highest accolade in crime writing\, the CWA Diamond Dagger. She is the creator of popular detectives Vera Stanhope\, Jimmy Perez and Matthew Venn\, who can be found on television in ITV’s Vera\, BBC One’s Shetland and ITV’s The Long Call respectively. The TV series and the books they are based on have become international sensations\, capturing the minds of millions worldwide. Ann worked as a probation officer\, bird observatory cook and auxiliary coastguard before she started writing. SUMMARY:Patrick Gale: Love Lane
DESCRIPTION:From beloved\, bestselling author Patrick Gale comes Love Lane\, a quietly powerful new novel about escape and entrapment\, love and loss\, and what home and family can truly mean. Set between the rural plains of Canada and 1950s Liverpool and Yorkshire\, Love Lane is a standalone novel that revisits characters from Patrick’s Costa-shortlisted novel\, A Place Called Winter. Across three generations\, it tells a deeply humane story of reckoning and return. \nBook now for what is sure to be a truly special evening in the company of much-loved author Patrick Gale.\n\nLove Lane:\nWhen Harry Cane\, a veteran Canadian wheat farmer\, is forced to sell up and sail back to an England reshaped by two world wars\, his arrival unsettles the family he abandoned decades earlier — a family for whom he has existed only as a distant myth. His daughter\, torn between duty and long-buried anger\, reluctantly takes him in. Yet Harry’s presence has unexpected consequences for the next generation: enabling his granddaughter to confront an unspeakable trauma\, and allowing her gentle husband\, at last\, to feel seen for who he truly is. \nAs Harry faces the question of whether it is possible to make a new life before it is too late\, Love Lane becomes a moving meditation on memory\, forgiveness\, and the fragile bonds that hold families together. \n***\n\nPatrick Gale was born on the Isle of Wight and grew up in Winchester before studying at Oxford University. He now lives on a farm near Land’s End. One of the UK’s best-loved novelists\, his works include Notes from an Exhibition (a Richard and Judy bestseller)\, A Perfectly Good Man\, Mother’s Boy and the Costa-shortlisted A Place Called Winter. His original BBC drama Man in an Orange Shirt was broadcast to great acclaim in 2017 as part of the BBC’s Queer Britannia season\, introducing his work to readers around the world.\n\nThursday 28 May | 7.30 pm\nPenarth Pier Pavilion\, The Esplanade\, CF64 3AU\nTickets:  £25.00 including a signed hardback copy of Love Lane (RRP £20.00)* / £12.00 Event Only** / £5.00 Student Ticket / £5.00 Inclusive Ticket \n*Any book not collected at the event will be held in Griffin Books for three months after the date of the event.\n**There are a limited number of Event Only\, Student and Inclusive tickets available.

Because we know so much about Van Gogh’s life\, there is a tendency to look for signs of the artist’s mental state in each of his works. But how much should we let our knowledge of Van Gogh’s personality affect our reading of his work? \nThis talk looks closely at the artist’s life in relation to his painting\, and questions whether Van Gogh’s work really does reflect his changing state of mind. \nFollowing the talk\, please stay for tea and cake\, served in the Pavilion’s beautiful Gallery.

SUMMARY:Art History Talk - The Birth of Impressionism and the Art of Modern Life
DESCRIPTION:What did it mean to paint modern life in 19th century Paris? \nIn the wake of political upheaval and radical urban transformation\, a group of young artists began to turn away from history painting and idealised myth. Instead\, they looked at the world around them—capturing fleeting moments in cafés\, on the streets\, at the theatre and in the countryside. \nBaron Haussmann’s dramatic redesign of Paris created sweeping boulevards\, public parks and new vantage points—spaces that became central to the Impressionist gaze. \nInspired by Charles Baudelaire’s call for a painter of modern life\, artists such as Claude Monet\, Edgar Degas and Gustave Caillebotte set out to reflect the pace\, spectacle and anonymity of the modern city. \nThis talk explores the birth of Impressionism and its focus on modern life. \nWhy was this work so controversial? And what exactly made it so modern?\n \nFollowing the talk\, please stay for tea and cake\, served in the Pavilion’s beautiful Gallery.

SUMMARY:The Keith Little Trio featuring Jane Williams
DESCRIPTION:The Keith Little Trio performs the best in jazz from the Swing era\, recalling the days of Benny Goodman\, Duke Ellington and ‘Fats’ Waller to name but a few. Expect an exhilarating night of Jazz and Swing from the 1930s\, 40s\, and beyond. \nKeith Little was first introduced to jazz at age 14 by his father Don\, a fine pianist in his own right. After many years on the road\, Keith returned home from Germany to lead one of Wales top bands; Keith Little Hot Six and later Keith Little Band. As well as being a regular on the UK jazz scene the band performed in the USA and across Europe. Keith is still thrilling audiences with his unique jazz touch\, and stunning boogie-woogie piano stylings.  \nJane Williams is a very much in demand jazz singer throughout Wales and beyond performing many times at the old Cafe Jazz\, Brecon\, Upton and Aberjazz Festivals\, and many other venues throughout the UK. Having recorded on Van Morrison’s album Roll with the Punches\, she truly has the voice of an angel and is not to be missed.  \nKevin Grenfell’s swing trombone-playing is a joy. He is a bandleader in his own right and regularly to be seen performing across England as a guest star. He is also well-known for his ready wit as the band’s frontman on stage.  \nBill Lynn hails from Bath and his driving bass playing and thoughtful soloing is delightful. Many years a music teacher\, he has also played for professional bands across the country.  \nJoin us for an evening that will treat you to a fantastic selection of great music\, while welcoming the exquisite voice of Jane Williams to sing some gorgeous melodies.

The 1986 film has a surprisingly complex history; it began as a short story\, then became a low-budget film\, before turning into an Off-Broadway play\, when finally Frank Oz and his team created this quirky\, screen version.
