SUMMARY:The Paper Girl with Caryl Lewis
DESCRIPTION:An invitation to celebrate your strength and find your true self.\n\nJoin multi-award-winning Welsh author Caryl Lewis for a magical interactive origami storytime celebrating the release of her gorgeous new children’s book\, The Paper Girl. \nCaryl will share the story of her journey as an author\, playwright and screenwriter before reading from The Paper Girl\, a powerful feminist fable that encourages young readers to embrace who they truly are. Inspired by the story\, you’ll create your own origami flowers\, stars\, animals and more to take home. \nThis event is aimed at young readers aged 4-8. \nThe Paper Girl:\n\nThis is the story of a girl made from paper\, who is bright and kind and eager to please. \nWhen she is told she should be beautiful\, she folds herself into a flower; when she is told she should be clever\, she folds herself into a fox; when she is told she should be a ‘shining example to others’\, she folds herself into a star. \nBut nothing she does is ever quite enough – until she does something truly beautiful\, clever and shiningly wonderful. She says\, ‘No.’  \nSo unfolds this modern fairy tale….\n\nThe Paper Girl is a spellbinding keepsake book about learning to say ‘no’ and the transformative beauty of becoming who you truly are\, brought to life with exquisite papercut artwork by début illustrator Kanako Abe. \nCaryl Lewis is a multi-award-winning Welsh novelist\, children’s writer\, playwright and screenwriter. Her breakthrough novel Martha\, Jac a Sianco is widely regarded as a modern classic of Welsh literature and sits on the Welsh curriculum. The film adaptation – with a screenplay by Caryl herself – went on to win six BAFTAs and the Spirit of the Festival Award at the Celtic Media Festival. Her other screenwriting work includes credits on BBC/S4C thrillers Hinterland and Hidden. In 2022\, her first works in English were published. First came her adult novel Drift\, which was named Waterstones Welsh Book of the Year and later scooped the prestigious Wales Book of the Year Award – with Caryl making history as the first author to win this coveted award in both languages. Next came her children’s novel\, Seed and a picture book illustrated by Carmen Saldana\, The Boy Who Dreamed Dragons. Her work has been published in multiple languages around the world. \nPLEASE NOTE: This is not a drop-off event\, parents and guardians must stay throughout to supervise their child/ren. \n***\nSunday 18 October  | 11.00 am – 12.00 noon\nGriffin Books\, 9A Windsor Road\, Penarth\, CF64 1JB*\nTickets: £15.00 including a SIGNED hardback copy of The Paper Girl (RRP £14.99)** / Sibling Ticket (without a book): £5.00 / Adult Ticket: £2.00 \n*IMPORTANT: Please be aware that the toilet at Griffin Books can only be accessed via three steps and so is not accessible for wheelchair users or people with mobility issues. SUMMARY:Stephen Payne: The Late Guest (GRIFFIN BOOKS AFTER HOURS)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of verse with Penarth poet and friend of the shop Stephen Payne\, as we celebrate the release of his new collection\, The Late Guest. \nThe prose poems in The Late Guest dwell on remembered episodes\, accidental encounters\, overheard conversations\, daydreams and art works to find surprising meaning. It is a playful and deft collection in which pickpockets\, psychoanalysts\, professors and philosophers run amok. There are exuberant dolphins\, aggressive whales and unsolvable arguments. Boys mime causes of death at the swimming pool and a geyser erupts sporadically but a trip to the Repair Café should see you right. Future wives and other interesting characters may be found in the kitchen of a party\, if only you could arrive on time. \nStephen Payne  was born in Merthyr and lives in Penarth. He has published poems in magazines including The Poetry Review\, The Rialto\, The North\, The Dark Horse\, Magma\, Poetry Wales and New Welsh Review. His was a Smiths Knoll mentee which led to the publication of his debut pamphlet The Probabilities of Balance in 2010. His first full collection Pattern Beyond Chance was published by HappenStance in 2015 and shortlisted for Wales Book of the Year. It was followed by The Windmill Proof (2021) and a pamphlet The Wax Argument & Other Thought Experiments (2022). Stephen’s most recent post was Professor of Human-Centric Systems at the University of Bath where he is currently Professor Emeritus. \nThis event forms part of our Griffin Books After Hours series of talks\, interviews and discussions\, which will take place in the shop. \n***\nThursday 22 October | 7.30 pm\nGriffin Books\, 9-9A Windsor Road\, Penarth\, CF64 1JB*\nTickets: £15.00 including a SIGNED copy of The Late Guest (RRP: £11.00)** / £8.00 Event Only / £5.00 Student Ticket / £5.00 Inclusive Ticket \n*IMPORTANT: Please be aware that the toilet at Griffin Books can only be accessed via three steps and so is not accessible for wheelchair users or people with mobility issues.
