DESCRIPTION:What did it mean to paint modern life in 19th century Paris? \nIn the wake of political upheaval and radical urban transformation\, a group of young artists began to turn away from history painting and idealised myth. Instead\, they looked at the world around them—capturing fleeting moments in cafés\, on the streets\, at the theatre and in the countryside. \nBaron Haussmann’s dramatic redesign of Paris created sweeping boulevards\, public parks and new vantage points—spaces that became central to the Impressionist gaze. \nInspired by Charles Baudelaire’s call for a painter of modern life\, artists such as Claude Monet\, Edgar Degas and Gustave Caillebotte set out to reflect the pace\, spectacle and anonymity of the modern city. \nThis talk explores the birth of Impressionism and its focus on modern life. \nWhy was this work so controversial? SUMMARY:The Keith Little Trio featuring Jane Williams
DESCRIPTION:The Keith Little Trio performs the best in jazz from the Swing era\, recalling the days of Benny Goodman\, Duke Ellington and ‘Fats’ Waller to name but a few. Expect an exhilarating night of Jazz and Swing from the 1930s\, 40s\, and beyond. \nKeith Little was first introduced to jazz at age 14 by his father Don\, a fine pianist in his own right. After many years on the road\, Keith returned home from Germany to lead one of Wales top bands; Keith Little Hot Six and later Keith Little Band. As well as being a regular on the UK jazz scene the band performed in the USA and across Europe. Keith is still thrilling audiences with his unique jazz touch\, and stunning boogie-woogie piano stylings.  \nJane Williams is a very much in demand jazz singer throughout Wales and beyond performing many times at the old Cafe Jazz\, Brecon\, Upton and Aberjazz Festivals\, and many other venues throughout the UK. Having recorded on Van Morrison’s album Roll with the Punches\, she truly has the voice of an angel and is not to be missed.  \nKevin Grenfell’s swing trombone-playing is a joy. He is a bandleader in his own right and regularly to be seen performing across England as a guest star. He is also well-known for his ready wit as the band’s frontman on stage.  \nBill Lynn hails from Bath and his driving bass playing and thoughtful soloing is delightful. Many years a music teacher\, he has also played for professional bands across the country.  \nJoin us for an evening that will treat you to a fantastic selection of great music\, while welcoming the exquisite voice of Jane Williams to sing some gorgeous melodies.

Self-taught before formal study\, his career has taken him from festival stages to prestigious French jazz conservatoires\, performing alongside and learning from some of the genre’s most respected musicians. His work spans manouche swing\, modern jazz\, and cross-cultural collaborations\, making his performances both virtuosic and warmly accessible. \nMike is a well established jazz and hot club style guitarist on the South Wales music scene.
