SUMMARY:Penarth Civic Society | The Windsor Clive Family and Penarth with Chris Riley
DESCRIPTION:Without the Windsor-Clive family\, Penarth as we know it would not exist.  They acquired the land\, made it accessible\, designed and created a completely new settlement.  To them we owe the quirky street plan\, the odd street names\, the parks and gardens\, the feel and character of the place.  But who were they? \nThe talk will trace how the Windsors and the Clives – long little known outside their respective midland counties – seized opportunities to increase their wealth and influence.  Marriage between them created one of the most important families in Victorian Glamorgan\, and Penarth remains indelibly marked by their energy and vision. \n\n\n\nThursday 20th November at St Augustine’s Hall\, Albert Road\nGuest Speaker : Chris Riley\n\n\nDoors open 6.30 PM\, talk starts at 7.00PM.\n\nFree to Members\, Non Members £3.00\, Non members 18-25 £2.00\nTickets can be booked at\nhttps://www.penarthsociety.org.uk/event-details/the-windsor-clive-family-and-penarth-chris-riley

SUMMARY:The Penarth Headland Link: An Update
DESCRIPTION:Alun Michael and John Lovell have been actively involved in promoting Penarth Headland Link proposals for almost a decade as two of the Trustees of the Penarth Headland Link Charity. \nThey will outline the history of the proposal to build the Penarth Headland Link as an integral part of the Cardiff Bay Barrage project and the benefits it will provide both for Penarth and more widely when it is built. The current proposal – which they will illustrate – will create an iconic structure and provide a significant start from the steps of the Senedd for the Wales Coast Path as well as creating a “destination” for the Barrage walk and significant circular options for walkers and cyclists\, to the benefit of the economy of Penarth and of Cardiff Bay. \nJohn Lovell : John spent eight years heading the European Construction Division of Arup and then co-founded and chaired the not-for-profit building company Tirion which developed the Mill site in Cardiff. He has led recent work in design work for the Link and confirming the economic value it will create. \nAlun Michael : Alun argued in favour of the Cardiff Bay Barrage as the MP for Cardiff South and Penarth. During 25 years in Parliament he held a number of senior roles including Secretary of State for Wales and became the first First Minister of Wales (First Secretary) in 1999. He resigned as the MP in 2012 to stand for election as Police & Crime Commissioner for South Wales\, a post he held until May last year. \nThis event is free to members\, £3.00 for non members. \nTickets can be purchased on the door.
