For the second year in a row, ‘Penarth in Bloom’ has been awarded a Silver medal as part of the ‘Wales in Bloom’ 2019 competition. The local scheme, which took place over the summer, saw over 70 independent businesses from across the town display planters outside their shops.

It was praised by judges for its community involvement and continued efforts in promoting floral improvements in and around Penarth.

This year also saw Penarth Town Council partner with Vision 21 and their Oaks Garden Nursery for the second year in a row. Vision 21 are a charity dedicated to providing realistic work-based training opportunities for people with learning needs, and they provided all the plants used within the scheme.

For the first time since its development, West House Community Garden was also recognised via the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards. Judges commended the amount of work which had gone into transforming the space and highlighted the work that Penarth Town Council does with Victoria Primary School as a particular success of the project.

All this helped the site achieve ‘Level 4: Thriving’ status, one level below the maximum rating of ‘Outstanding.’

“We are delighted with the efforts of our grounds staff, the enthusiasm that is always on display from Victoria Primary School, and of course the ongoing support of the local community,” a spokesperson for Penarth Town Council said. “It’s always great to see such a local appetite for the scheme each and every year.”

Preparations are already underway for the next Penarth in Bloom Scheme, due to take place before Christmas.
