Penarth’s independent traders are collaborating this April on an innovative campaign to encourage local spending.
The ‘Pay it Forward with a Penarth Fiver’ promotion will give customers the chance to win one of 10 gift hampers each time they spend at least £5 in a participating business. The more they ‘shop local’, the more chances they will have!
The initiative launches on Friday 1st April and runs until Easter Saturday. During that period, for each transaction of £5 or more customers will be given a ‘Penarth Fiver’ which is a ticket for the prize draw. The scheme encourages them to visit other shops and hospitality venues within the town for more chances to win – there’s no limit on entries per person.
“When you spend £5 in a local business it’s worth far more than that to the community,” said Angelina Hall, chair of the Penarth Business Group and co-owner of retail gallery and studio Glass by Design. “Independent business owners tend to spend with other local traders, so your money circulates within the town with a significant multiplier effect. It’s estimated that if every adult in Penarth spent an extra £5 a week locally, it would add £4.3 million a year to our local economy!”
The ‘Pay it Forward with a Penarth Fiver’ campaign is the latest in a series of innovative initiatives from the Penarth Business Forum, which encourages local traders to work together to maintain the strength and vibrancy of the town’s business offer. Forum member Mel Griffin, of award-winning independent bookshop Griffin Books, said “We’re already collaborating on a new approach to lighting up Penarth this Christmas, which we hope will bring extra sparkle and magic to the town. Watch this space!”
