Penarth is set to be the first town in the Vale of Glamorgan to welcome the Nextbike electric bike sharing provider to its streets. The pilot scheme is to be launched in 2020 with 50 electric assisted bikes and up to 7 docking stations in the town.
Funded by Section 106 sustainable transport developers’ contributions, the pilot project garnered support from Penarth Town Council, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Cardiff Council and could be expanded into other areas of the Vale if the pilot proves successful.
“This has largely come about via public demand, which is fantastic.” Penarth Town Council’s Principal Officer for Policy, Development & Innovation said. “We hope it will not only improve links into Cardiff and reduce our impact on the environment but also encourage residents and visitors alike to explore and rediscover our wonderful town.”
Both the Vale of Glamorgan and Penarth Town Council have worked together to identify potential locations within the town for the electric bike docking stations. So far, the list of considerations includes:
- Penarth Town Centre
- Cogan Train Station
- Penarth Train Station
- Llandough Hospital
- Penarth Esplanade & the Clifftops
- Cosmeston Country Park
Now, the Vale of Glamorgan Council are inviting residents to give their suggestions. Visit www.nextbike.co.uk/en/penarth to submit your suggestions and find out more about the scheme, including information about business membership or advertising opportunities.
