SUMMARY:The Ghost Train
DESCRIPTION:An assortment of assorted railway travellers find themselves stranded in the waiting room of an isolated country station in the evening. The station master tries to persuade them to leave as he is closing the station for the night. When they refuse\, he warns them of the supernatural danger of a passenger train\, its passengers fatally wrecked in the locality several years before\, that sometimes haunts the line at night\, bringing death to all who set eyes upon it. Incredulous of his story\, they still refuse to leave\, and he departs leaving them facing a night at the station. \nFor more information or to purchase tickets\, please visit https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/pods/the-ghost-train/e-xzqjpo.

SUMMARY:Penarth Ministry Area | Prayer Vigil for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:In response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza\, Penarth Ministry Area is organising a Vigil of Prayer at All Saints Church\, Victoria Square\, on Sunday 5th October between 6 and 9pm. Those attending are asked to wear red or bring something red so that we can join in with Christian Aid’s ‘Red Line for Gaza’ campaign and form a symbolic red line outside the church. \nDuring the three-hour vigil there will be some intermittent readings and prayers but also plenty of time for silent reflection and prayer\, and the chance to light a candle of hope. All are welcome to join us for all or part of that time to pray for the desperate people of Gaza\, for the aid agencies working in the region\, for the release of all hostages and for a route to lasting peace in the Middle East – please drop in for however long you can spare.

Joanna became a household name as Stacey Shipman in the BBC’s much-loved comedy Gavin & Stacey\, appearing in all three series\, the 2019 Christmas special\, and the final ever episode in 2024\, which became the UK’s most-watched scripted show since records began. \nAlongside her acting career\, Joanna regularly appears on TV as a presenter\, most recently fronting Joanna Page’s Wild Life for the BBC. When she’s not working\, she’s at home with her husband\, actor James Thornton\, their four children\, two dogs (Lola and Bess)\, and four guinea pigs.\nLush! is her first memoir. \n***\nMonday 22 September | 7.30 pm (Doors at 7.00pm)\nThe Paget Rooms\, Penarth \nTickets: £30.00 includes a SIGNED hardback copy of Lush! SUMMARY:The Penarth Headland Link: An Update
DESCRIPTION:Alun Michael and John Lovell have been actively involved in promoting Penarth Headland Link proposals for almost a decade as two of the Trustees of the Penarth Headland Link Charity. \nThey will outline the history of the proposal to build the Penarth Headland Link as an integral part of the Cardiff Bay Barrage project and the benefits it will provide both for Penarth and more widely when it is built. The current proposal – which they will illustrate – will create an iconic structure and provide a significant start from the steps of the Senedd for the Wales Coast Path as well as creating a “destination” for the Barrage walk and significant circular options for walkers and cyclists\, to the benefit of the economy of Penarth and of Cardiff Bay. \nJohn Lovell : John spent eight years heading the European Construction Division of Arup and then co-founded and chaired the not-for-profit building company Tirion which developed the Mill site in Cardiff. He has led recent work in design work for the Link and confirming the economic value it will create. \nAlun Michael : Alun argued in favour of the Cardiff Bay Barrage as the MP for Cardiff South and Penarth. During 25 years in Parliament he held a number of senior roles including Secretary of State for Wales and became the first First Minister of Wales (First Secretary) in 1999. He resigned as the MP in 2012 to stand for election as Police & Crime Commissioner for South Wales\, a post he held until May last year. \nThis event is free to members\, £3.00 for non members. \nTickets can be purchased on the door.

SUMMARY:Art History Talk - Gwen John
DESCRIPTION:Gwen John is renowned for her haunting portraits of solitary women. \nYet\, contrary to the image of the reclusive artist\, this pupil of Whistler\, admirer of Cézanne\, and lover of Rodin was a forward-thinking artist whose work was ahead of its time. \nFor many years\, she was overshadowed by her flamboyant brother Augustus and her turbulent affair with Rodin. But Gwen forged a unique path in the art world\, defying conventions with her luminous portraits and quiet interiors. \n‘Without sacrificing scholarship\, Stella Grace Lyons has a most engaging way of hooking an audience into sharing her passionate interest in art history\, drawing three dimensional human stories and experiences from the two-dimensional canvas’\n– Maev Kennedy\, Guardian Arts Correspondent \nStella Grace Lyon’s talk unveils the enigmatic brilliance of a Welsh woman who proved that stillness could be revolutionary. \nFollowing the talk\, please stay for tea and cake\, served in the Pavilion’s beautiful Gallery.

SUMMARY:Cecelia Ahern: Paper Heart
DESCRIPTION:And perhaps in that big\, beautiful universe there’s someone waiting for her. If she can find the courage to open her heart. \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening with Cecelia Ahern – the international bestselling author of PS\, I Love You\, Where Rainbows End\, and Roar. We’re thrilled to welcome Cecelia to Penarth Pier Pavilion to discuss her tender and timely new novel Paper Heart – a luminous exploration of isolation\, resilience\, and the quiet bravery it takes to step back into the world. \nPaper Heart:\nPip’s world is small. But it’s about to become a whole lot bigger. \nFor years she’s tucked away her dreams\, shrinking herself into the space left behind – like the delicate origami she creates alone in her room.\nThen hope comes from an unlikely place: an astronomer from the local observatory. He teaches her to look up at the stars\, and to see a world far bigger and more beautiful than she ever imagined. \nAnd perhaps in that big\, beautiful universe there’s someone waiting for her. If she can find the courage to open her heart. \nPip never stopped dreaming\, but now it’s time for her to live – and maybe even to fall in love. \n*** \nCecelia Ahern is beloved by women across the globe for her utterly original and imaginative storytelling. Her novels cut to the heart of what matters to her readers\, underlining her novels with searing social commentary on the pressures of modern life. With tenderness and insight\, she offers a roadmap for how to overcome hard times. It’s no wonder that she has captured the hearts and minds of millions of readers.\nCecelia’s debut novel PS\, I Love You was an international bestseller and was adapted to film starring Hilary Swank. Her second novel\, Where Rainbows End\, was adapted into Love\, Rosie starring Lily Collins. Her books have been published in over thirty-seven languages\, and have sold over twenty-five million copies. In addition to her novels\, she is also the author of a highly acclaimed collection of stories\, Roar\, which is now an Apple Original series starring Nicole Kidman on Apple TV+.\n\nWednesday 3 September | 7.30 pm\nPenarth Pier Pavilion\, The Esplanade\, CF64 3AU\nTickets:  £25.00 including a signed hardback copy of ‘Paper Heart’ (RRP £20.00)* / £10.00 Event Only** / £5.00 Student Ticket / £5.00 Inclusive Ticket \n**Any book not collected at the event will be held in Griffin Books for three months after the date of the event.\n*There are a limited number of Event Only tickets available.

SUMMARY:Into the Wild with James Roberts and Jon Gower
DESCRIPTION:Come along to a special evening in the company of two remarkable nature writers\, James Roberts and Jon Gower\, as they explore our deep and enduring relationship with the natural world. \nIn Two Lights: Walking at Dawn and Dusk on a Turning Planet\, longlisted for the 2024 RSL Ondaatje Prize\, James Roberts charts a luminous journey through landscapes and loss. From the Cambrian Mountains to the Pacific Northwest\, his dawn and dusk walks become a meditation on grief\, connection\, and the quiet\, redemptive power of the wild. \nIn Birdland\, Jon Gower turns his keen journalist’s eye and lifelong passion for birdlife into a rich exploration of the birds that share our skies. From the delicate song of a wren to the drama of a murmuration\, he captures their wonder while confronting the urgent threats they face through climate change and habitat loss. \nTogether\, these books provide beauty and insight into what can be found when we pay close attention to the world around us. \nThis event is part of our Summer at Griffin Books programme. Events will take place in our newly extended shop on Penarth high street.\n\n***\nTwo Lights: Walking at Dawn and Dusk on a Turning Planet:\nLonglisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize 2024\, ‘Two Lights’ by James Roberts is a lyrical journey through landscapes and loss. From swans in the Cambrian Mountains to wolves in the Pacific Northwest\, Roberts finds solace and connection in the wild. Walking at dawn and dusk\, he moves through grief toward hope\, discovering a path back to life through encounters with the natural world. \nBirdland:\n‘Birdland’ by journalist and lifelong birder Jon Gower explores our deep connection with birds\, from the song of a wren to the spectacle of murmuration. Travelling across Britain in search of species like the wryneck and dotterel\, Gower celebrates birds as everyday miracles that have long inspired art and song\, yet he also confronts the decline in bird populations over the past 50 years\, examining the impacts of climate change and habitat loss. This is both a love letter to birdlife and a powerful call to protect it.\n\nJAMES ROBERTS is a writer and artist who lives in the hills of the Welsh Border country. His essays and poems have been published widely\, and his artwork has featured in several exhibitions\, books and theatre productions. He writes on Substack and shows work on Instagram as @nightriverwood. \n \nJON GOWER is a former BBC Wales arts and media correspondent who has over 40 books to his name. These include The Story of Wales\, which accompanied a landmark TV series\, the travelogue An Island Called Smith and Y Storïwr\, which won the Wales Book of the Year. \n***\nThursday 21 August | 7.30 pm\nGriffin Books\, 9A Windsor Road\, Penarth\, CF64 1JB*\nTickets: £8.00 Event Only / £5.00 Student Ticket / £5.00 Inclusive Ticket \n*IMPORTANT: Please be aware that the toilet at Griffin Books can only be accessed via three steps and so is not accessible for wheelchair users or people with mobility issues. SUMMARY:Men Walking and Talking Penarth
DESCRIPTION:Men Walking and Talking is a local community initiative that brings men together for a friendly\, informal walk every Tuesday evening in Penarth. \nThe group was set up to help end the stigma around men’s mental health by creating a regular\, safe space for men to connect\, talk (if they want to)\, and support one another. \nThere’s no pressure to share anything – some people come for the conversation\, others simply enjoy the company and the fresh air. \nEach walk lasts around an hour\, taken at a relaxed and steady pace. The group meets at the Plymouth Park Car Park near Cogan Tesco\, and walks take place in all weathers\, throughout the year. \nThere’s no need to sign up\, no fees\, and no commitment – just turn up\, say hello\, and walk with us. It’s open to all men\, regardless of age or background. \nMen Walking and Talking – Penarth has been running for nearly two years and continues to grow steadily\, helping more men feel connected and supported within the local community. \nIf you or someone you know could benefit from a gentle walk and some good company\, please do come along or help spread the word.
